Information we will need to prepare the Permit Application for your Rooftop Project.

This is a Summary of information Boeman Design will need to complete a Permit Application for a typical exterior rooftop project. We recommend starting the process of collecting this information as soon as possible to avoid delays in the preparation of the Permit Application and the permit process.

  1. Plat of Survey

    The City of Chicago requires A Plat of Survey be provided with the permit application. The Plat of Survey must be completed within 6 months prior to the date of the application, and bear the seal of a licensed surveyor.

    If you have an older Plat of Survey we recommend contacting the Surveyor who prepared it to see if they can provide an updated Survey. Otherwise contact a licensed surveyor. Unfortunately we do not have a list of recommended surveyors.

  2. Original Permit Drawings

    For newer construction the city will require permit drawings of the original building that have the approval stamps of the departments of Zoning and Buildings. These can sometimes be obtained from the contractor, developer or architect if you are the first or second owner of the house. They are under no obligation to provide these documents and may not be responsive. If you live in a condominium then your association may have copies. These can also be obtained through a Department of Buildings Freedom of information Request by following the instructions below:

    • “as to obtaining blueprints for a property, one must provide the following information with their request: Proof of Ownership; For Non-Owner:1) Letter of authorization, signed by the owner. And it must be notarized. For an Owner: (only one of the following will be accepted: 1) Deed 2) Title 3) Water bill. Plans are exempt from FOIA under 5ILCS 140/7 (10(k).”

    • “One can then scan and email to dobfoia@cityofchicago.org.”

  3. Debt Check and Permit Application Information

    For projects submitted under the Self Certification Program the City of Chicago will perform a debt check. All debts with the City of Chicago will need to be resolved before the City will accept the permit application. We will initiate this process but will require some additional information for each person listed on the building title:
